Improved nitrification by biomass immobilised on LEVAPOR carrier Due to slow growth and sensitivity of nitrifying bacteria is nitrification process in the practice often problematical and instable. While in municipal sew age treatment plants fluctuations of • Water flow, • N-loads, • Temperature and • do represent main reasons for upsets (by washing out of nitrifying biomass, consequently reducing the sludge age), in the case of industrial effluents • Low sludge yield , • Weak tendency to flocculation, • Presence of inhibitory pollutants, resp. • Increased sensitivity of nitrifying biomass may be responsible for problems. Due to the improved resistance of immobilised microorganismes to inhibitors and inhibitory effects of pH and temperatures, their immobilisation on adsorbing carriers results always in a better efficiecy and higher stability of this process. Fluidised bed reactors with 12-15 vol.%, as well as expanded and fixed bed reactors with higher volume of LEVAPOR are suitable for nitrification. Most simple seems the upgrading of existing activated sludge basins into fluidised bed reactors by installing a suitable screen for the retention of carrier cubes.
